Not a lot of people know what goes on behind the big metal door at 222 Studios. The space is operated by 221a Artist Run Centre and all of the people who work here with me are pretty awesome. The entrance to the studios is often blocked by people who try to shoot-up, have illicit sex and sleep (and much more!) and while we have nothing against them, we often interrupt them in the process. As a group we decided that one solution would simply be to announce to people that the space is active and that the door is used frequently. The solution was to paint the doorway bright to announce to people that the door is used.
I managed to procure recycled paint (I found gold!) and masked off zones in relation to the tiles to create this eye-catching pattern to announce the space. Unfortunately it was vandalised three weeks after it was painted (bottom right). Such is life in the Downtown East Side.
